NHS vs. Private Travel Vaccines: What's Free & What's Paid?
In the UK, some travel vaccines may be available free through NHS services, while others are generally paid for privately when needed for travel.
Usually Free on the NHS (GP Surgeries)
These vaccines protect against diseases considered to pose the greatest public health risk if brought back into the UK. Your GP may provide them free if they offer a travel health service:
- Hepatitis A (Single & booster dose)
- Typhoid (Injectable or oral)
- Polio, Tetanus & Diphtheria (Td/IPV) booster
- Cholera (Dukoral oral vaccine)
Always Paid Privately (Travel Clinics)
These specialist vaccines are not funded by the NHS for travel. You must pay private clinic fees at providers like Boots, Superdrug, or MASTA:
- Yellow Fever (from a designated vaccination centre)
- Rabies
- Japanese Encephalitis
- Meningitis ACWY (entry rules may apply to Hajj/Umrah travel)
- Tick-Borne Encephalitis
Frequently Asked Travel Health Questions
When should I book my travel vaccines?
Ideally, you should consult a travel clinic or GP at least 6 to 8 weeks before departure. Some vaccines, such as Rabies (3 doses), Hepatitis B (3 doses), or Japanese Encephalitis (2 doses), require several weeks between injections for full immunity.
Can I receive a Yellow Fever vaccine at any local pharmacy?
No. Yellow Fever vaccination can only be administered by a designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre (YFVC) registered with NaTHNaC. Selected branches of Boots, Superdrug Health Clinics, and MASTA clinics are registered centres authorised to issue the required yellow International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP).
Do I need a prescription for malaria tablets?
Yes, antimalarial tablets such as Malarone (atovaquone/proguanil) and Doxycycline are prescription-only medications in the UK. However, you do not need to visit your GP in person: regulated online pharmacies and travel clinics provide online consultations to prescribe and dispense them directly.
